How many pallets fit on a B-double?

34 CHEP pallets on the floor of a standard Australian B-double: 12 on the lead trailer and 22 on the rear trailer. With Euro pallets it's 51.

That count assumes one pallet per space, nothing hanging over the pallet's edges, and a total weight within the combination's payload.

Where the 34 comes from

A CHEP pallet is 1,165 mm square. A curtain-sider deck is about 2.4 m wide inside, so two pallets sit side by side with a few centimetres to spare. After that it's a question of length:

  • The lead trailer has about 750 cm of deck, which is 6 rows of 2: 12 pallets.
  • The rear trailer has about 1350 cm, which is 11 rows of 2: 22 pallets.

Euro pallets

Euro pallets are 1,200 × 800 mm, so three fit across a 2.4 m deck with their 1.2 m sides running along the trailer. That gives 18 on the lead trailer and 33 on the rear: 51 in total.

Check the weight before the count

34 pallets at a tonne each is 34 t, which is around what a B-double can carry at general mass limits once the prime mover and trailers are weighed. Heavier pallets run out of payload before they run out of space. The planner uses 34,000 kg; change it to match your own combination's tare and the route's mass limits.

Weight also has to be spread sensibly between the two trailers and over the axle groups. The planner shows each trailer's share and keeps heavy freight low.

Mezz decks

Some B-doubles have mezz decks, a second floor that lets non-stackable pallets travel two high. Where both levels have the height for the freight, that can nearly double the pallet count. Turn on the mezz deck in the planner's equipment settings and set the deck height to see what fits.
